I just love the names you all have given your ferrets and was wondering where they came from. Some of them are really unusual - Q-tip, Nyalla, NoNo, Solari, Luna, Kaz and Astra, to name but a few.

Do you all have to have your new ferret for a while to see what name suits it or does the name just pop into your head? And what nicknames do you give them?

For instance - when the breeder brought Muis to our house, Muis didn't have a name yet and the lady thought that Tinkerbell would suit her. I looked at Muis and thought, "Hah! Tinkerbell? You have to be kidding!" because she was a big ferret, not a little fairy-like one (!) and, God bless her, she really wasn't a very pretty ferret. Don't get me wrong, I thought she was gorgeous but she wasn't "pretty", like some albino girls are.

It took a couple of days but all the while I kept thinking that Muis looked like a mouse but no way would I insult her and call her Mouse. However I knew that there was a Dutch girl's name, Muis, which sounded like mouse when it was pronounced and so she was named Muis. However she was always referred to as my "Mousey Mouse" and it really suited her :D

Talking of nicknames, Angus ends up as Angustus when I call him while Mojo is the mojasaurus when she's got that wicked gleam in her eye as she focuses on getting her teeth into my inner arm :lol:

My daughter named Luna (white as the moon) and Solari (the sun), then we had Astra who is a little star and big boofy Kazooie, named by my son from the game Banjo Kazooie.
Nicknames:
Solari = Fizzgig, Little Bear.
Kazooie = Kaz, King Kasimir, The Boofy One and Cuddlebug
Astra= Little Miss Bitey, Panda.
Luna = Lulu, Miss Mouse.

Interesting topic, Nona.

When I got Bart and Victoria, Victoria's name was "Zoe". Due to lack of human contact, she didn't know it, so, based on "Victoria the White Cat", from the musical, "CATS", I changed her name to Victoria. It fit better. Bart, seemed like Bart Simpson, so I left it alone (his full name became, "Bart, Quit it!").

Skipper was just so bouncy and full of energy that it just seemed to fit (not that it mattered, he was deaf and it didn't matter what you called him).

Buddy came to me as "Twitter", and that was long before the internet "Twitter" became popular. Again, due to total neglect, he didn't know his name either. He was just to big and laid back to be called that; it's like calling Hoss Cartwright (of "Bonanza" fame) "Twitter" - it just don't fit. Not to mention that, if he got loose, I really didn't want to be running the neighborhood yelling "Twitter!".

I just held him and said, "Lord, what am I gonna call this new little buddy?" "That's it", I heard, so, "Buddy" came about. It fits.

Nipper came with that name, and since he knew his name, I left it alone. It's from when you scratch his back, how he goes into that little little front teeth nipping thing on your arm.

Victor didn't know his name either, and was being called "Snow" or something like that, so I named him after Victoria.

NoNo came with that name, and since she knew it, I left it alone. The people I got her from said that name, along with the name of her dead brother, "DingDing", came from two cartoon characters, but I don't know which cartoon.

That's it. :)

:D I love this Topic Nona. :D (Fluffy came to me with that name she knew it. ( If I had gotton her my self she would of been called (Digit) as she was just a tiny kind of homely little thing. She had a heart of gold that baby did) Trouble Bubble was a live wirer when I got her & into everything, Holding her on my way home from the pet story, I knew I was in for Trouble.) BoBo he was such a cuncky Brown ball of fur, Looked like a little BoBo bear, the name fits him all to well )Zoie & Bandie had already been named & both answered to their names , so left them alone) Icey also came with her name & knew it, she was so white a beautiful Dew who captured my heart from the first time I saw her.( Not that they all haven't got a peace of my heart ,they all do )Digger & Raven , I liked their names & they seem to like them as well.Even thou Raven looks & is the size my Fluffy was, Raven fits Her.

how is everyone going

how are u lil fuzz balls going?

well nyalla is the afrikans word for a small buck (kinda like bambi) my boyfriend named her and that named just suited her so well.
its so funny when people first tried to say her name they would say it so funny but correct them like any mother would.

the other night i had a dream about my little girl and she was running around being the bubbley self which was great to see her happy.

i know it might be strange for some people but i actually asked god to show me a sign that she was happy and that was my sign i miss her more and more every day but i know that she is happy and safe.

but i can tell you guys that i recently just brought a goana lol her is name is pebble she is such a cutie pie

love em

I love hearing these stories, I really do! Thank you everyone who has contributed so far - I've really enjoyed hearing about your ferrets' names and where they came from and think you all have great names for your babies :D

I also hope some of you silent ferret owners will tell us about your ferret's/ferrets' names too! Please don't be shy -- we won't bite!! ;)

Emma -- just wondering -- is this the animal in this newspaper article the name that your BF said was the Afrikaans word for Nyalla ... ?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article ... d-her.html

I must say I can see absolutely how it would suit a ferret if that was the case :)

And, again -- Emma ... as you are an honoured member of this group and also an Uber Ferret member, and as we're all so fond of you ... if you'd like to put Pebble's pictures up in the Off Topic section,I'm sure everyone would love to see your goanna! :D

I know I've said this site should have pictures only of our ferrets but, hey, we can make an exception occasionally, can't we!! :D

wahahaha, this is a funny post! :lol:

I got q-tips name cause I was trying to think of something white (was going to go with Whitey, but liked Q-tip after I thought of it :) ) Haha, my mom keeps calling him toothpick, cause he is so long and skiny. and my brother calls him a slinky. I'm suprised how my mom likes them, she HATES rodents. But I think she's starting to like them. One day I'll trick her into coming over and playing with them! :twisted: :lol:

Tinker is short for Tinkerbell (I deemed after having her for a month) It was Tinker at first though, she was into everything and "tinkering" with it all. I think she Fits as a Tinkerbell, she is tiny compared to my 2 males, but she sure puts up a good fight when they're playing!!

And Guy is short for Guy-Smile .... I always smile when he does his little schooching backwards (after Admin said her ferret ran backwards, I realized that he did that 2!) LOL. He's so good at it sometimes, it lookes like he is sitting and hovering backwards! (and sideways too sometimes) He's really good at finding the hole he's backing into without even looking where he is going. The smart turd has my apartment memorized or something!
